80s Fancy Dress Costumes

The very mention of 80′s fancy dress, brings back many fond memories…

It was a time when funky clothes and big hairdos were everyone’s fashion.

Those were the days when you could look your best with the simplest of 80s style clothes but with the funkiest of colours.

Such were the the days where tartan bondage trousers, pop skirts, tutu skirts, bright pink hair,  zebra prints, tiger prints and fluorescent colours were all the top fashion statement of the time. Now the retro fashion theme has come back into fashion and is really popular at the moment.

So it is pretty easy to find bits and pieces for your 80s fancy dress costume as all the retail shops on the high street have collections of funky, wild retro gear for your fancy dress outfit. You may find a great 80s outfit or 70′s outfit  in charity shops, like rocker costumes, leather jackets, boots and other gear. Ask them when they put out new stock. You may find something quite suitable and fun.

Go for simple trousers and top look by wearing a pair of high pants and a soft knitted sweater with a set of pearl earring and necklace to jazz it up.

Be an 80s superstar …

… wearing 1980s costumes such as a skirt and jacket with shoulder pads. Or choose to go rock ‘n’ roll dressed with an 80s glam rock guitar costume. You can set your gear to imitate any 80s pop star like Michael Jackson, Madonna, Whitney Houston or even Tina Turner! Madonna costumes and Abba outfits are a groovy fun choice. The men can dress up as Mr T with lots of bling  and chunky rings and necklaces. One of Madonna’s classic outfits is Material Girl.

Accessorize, accessorize, accessorize …

Spice your outfit with a bow in your hair, an eighties pop star wig and heavy make up. Top it all off with a glitter microphone. You can pick up some great ideas from the 1980′s film ‘Grease’. Now thats what you call the 80s fashion. Try the glam girl outfit; Spotty top, netted skirt, pink hair, fishnet gloves and hair as big and bold as you dare to go. Top it off with bright blue or red shoes. You can mix and match many colours and elements together.

Loving The Knitwear:

Wear a pair of high waisted trousers with a soft cardigan for a simple-but-says-a lot 80s fancy dress costume. Women of the 80s loved knitwear. Colours were bright and bold, greens, yellows, purples, blacks, winter whites and gleaming greens. Sweaters were decorated with sequins, beads and embroidery. Clothing with sleeves that looked like a batwing were a fashion statement then and now they are back in.

Bold and Bright Make up:

Bold pink cheekbones and painted eyes was something that everyone had in the eighties. Women in the eighties would spend hours in front of the mirror doing their make up, getting it perfect. Blues and greens were the favourite shades in eyeshadow, with lots of eyeliner and red lipstick to finish off their image. Try and look for the brightest and boldest colours for your 80s fancydress costume.

Fishnets and Corsets:

Bold, bright, patterned leggings  and tights were worn alone or under a skirt. Lacy corsets were worn for evening wear and as lingerie. Wearing one earring and plummy red hair were often a combination that worked well together. Fishnet fingerless gloves and tights and big chunky shoes were a fashion statement.

So no wonder everyone wants to relive the eighties nowadays. It was so full of fun, bright colors and ‘out here’ confidence. A nice change from the gloomy atmosphere that many of us are otherwise living in today.
